Artist Statement
Art is a reflection of ones’ soul and lifetime memories placed upon canvas or revealed in stone. Having spent my life on or near the oceans, experiences come to life in my works. Coral reefs disappear and species become endangered, creating my passion to inspire awareness. My artwork comes from my heart and goes beyond mere technical prowess. It strives to find the core elements and reveal the voice within the canvas. Time spent painting, surfing, sailing, and fishing is not deducted from your life span. Stay happy and creative!
I have been blessed to have spent so many years in close proximity to the oceans. Nearly two decades in Hawaii, the same in Santa Cruz, California, and now in Florida. The time spent surfing, sailing, fishing, windsurfing, and painting has shaped my inner being that is revealed in my artworks. It certainly helped that my mother was the epitome of the “starving artist”. Somehow site made a living her entire life and was a happy, inspirational, and fun person who taught me to paint at a young age. My dad taught me to be the best you can be at whatever you choose to do and to not rush things. I am a combination of both of my parents. As a surfboard manufacturer in Hawaii, I created a lot of surfboard graphics, logos, drawings, paintings, and design work.
In the end, there is no substitute for persistence, study, practice, and an endless striving for perfection. I’m often asked, “Which painting is your favorite?” and the truth is, it is the current one I’m working on after I struggle and work through my love-hate phases. Great artwork takes time …
There is an observation I’d like to share with you. When you paint it forces you to slow down and you see the world in a different way. When you look at a tree, for instance, you see many subtle shades of color and the world becomes a much more beautiful place. I hope everyone gets a chance to experience the subtle and beautiful colors. I will continue to create these visions on canvas.
